Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver confirmed today that the Hokies will open the 2009 season against a Southeastern Conference team ? probably Alabama -- in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

Weaver said representatives of the ESPN/ABC family of television networks contacted him about the possibility of the Hokies opening with Alabama in a "made-for-TV" game.

Negotiations are ongoing with the Crimson Tide and should that deal fall through, Weaver said, another SEC team would likely replace Alabama. The Tide will open this season against Clemson in the Georgia Dome.

"It's very similar to opening the season in 2004 with USC," Weaver said. "This is certainly on par with that, and it excites us. It's a great opportunity for our program."

To accommodate the game, Tech has pushed back its previously scheduled 2009 opener with Cincinnati to 2012.

The Hokies' non-conference schedule in 2009 is now likely to be its toughest in recent memory. Nebraska was already scheduled to play in Blacksburg that season, and will remain on the schedule. Tech will also host Marshall and play at East Carolina in 2009.

Weaver said neither he nor coach Frank Beamer was worried about adding another difficult opponent.

"Not at all," Weaver said. "We both thought we should do it, without a doubt."

The Hokies last played Alabama in the 1998 Music City Bowl, a game Tech won, setting up the following season's run to the national championship game.

And some on here try to claim VT dodges games with top teams and are always in disbelief when VT fans tell of teams that don't want to play?

He acknowledges UA and his organization are not "anywhere close" to an agreement. The Alabama source indicated as much, citing the fact that coach Nick Saban's team is already under contract to open with Florida International, then play Tulane in Week 2 of 2009.

Just quoting the Bama "source" from the article dude. And games are "backed out of" all the time. All Bama has to do is do it. What would the payoff be to get out of the FI game? I'm sure they could make up the difference with a possible Labor Day night game on national tv.

Heck Tech was left looking for an opponent last season after a team opted out on them. And they have pushed back their Cincy game to open a spot to play an SEC team IN SEC country.

I was referring to the GA Dome, is that not the site of the SEC title game? Sorry for the confusion.

Yeah, but it's in the same city as GA Tech..

So, is Jacksonville ACC country or SEC country? When it's the site of "The Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" is it SEC country and then when it's the site of The ACC Championship game is it ACC country? Do you have to have dual citizenship? How's that work?

Weird..I was contemplating the same thing.
